New center focuses on needs of adopted children

The opening of the Center for Developmental Adoption Medicine offers the Delaware Valley an important new resource for those thinking of adopting and for those who already have.

Located on the grounds of Abington Memorial Hospital at 1400 Old York Road, under the direction of Davida Harlem, PhD, the Center provides pre-adoption guidance and post-adoption services in a supportive, multi-disciplinary environment.  Currently, there is no other facility in the region offering such a wide range of services specifically for adopted children.

“Over 20,000 children are adopted each year, often bringing with them complex medical, developmental and psychological issues,” says Dr. Harlem, “High risk factors include the birth mother’s health and care during pregnancy, as well as emotional deprivation in institutionalized care. Our role at the Center is to help parents identify and treat the needs of their adopted child.”

Couples will learn the right questions to ask before adopting a child and receive advice on easing their baby’s adjustment to a new home.  Following adoption, the Center provides early detection of developmental difficulties, addressing potential problems before they impact a child’s life.

The Center’s team includes Arlene Verno, P.T., Physical Therapy Coordinator, Gwen Bihn, RN, Pediatric Nurse Coordinator and Barbara Perin, PT. Working in coordination with the child’s pediatrician, the Center addresses a wide range of cognitive, social, emotional, language and motor skill problems.  From establishing a developmental profile and assessing learning disabilities, to the more everyday issues of feeding and sleeping, the Center offers comprehensive evaluations and treatment plans. It also provides prospective parents with advice regarding potential adoption concerns.

A psychologist specializing in childhood developmental disorders, Dr. Harlem received her Master’s degree and Doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania with a clinical internship at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In addition to her private practice, Davida Harlem currently serves as the developmental psychologist to the Neonatal Follow-Up Program at Abington Memorial Hospital. Dr. Harlem and her associates have all been in practice for over 25 years.
