Dr. Harlem to conduct 4-part seminar on adoption at Abington Adult School

Dr. Davida P. Harlem, developmental psychologist and director of the Center for Developmental Adoption Medicine in Abington, will conduct a four–part seminar for adoptive parents and for prospective parents of adoptees at the Abington Adult School beginning Jan. 31.

The four 90-minute sessions will cover what to look for and what to ask during the pre-adoption process for both domestic and international adoptions; developmental issues after adoption, including cognitive, learning, language and motor milestones; post-adoption social and emotional issues such as sleeping and eating, bonding, attachment and abandonment; and the adopted child in school. This final session will help parents sensitize their children’s teacher and school to various issues associated with adoption.

Dr. Harlem, in private practice for 25 years, founded the Center for Developmental Adoption Medicine to provide pre-adoption guidance and post-adoption services for parents and children through all stages of development. Dr. Harlem received her Ph.D in child/school psychology from the University of Pennsylvania with a clinical internship in developmental/psychological pediatrics at Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia. She also holds a master’s degree from Penn in psychological services. She is affiliated with Abington Memorial Hospital where she serves as the developmental psychologist to the Neonatal Follow-up Program.
